Moretti, DeMeo Take Over the Fourth Quarter in Win Over UMass Boston

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's basketball team forced an astounding 34 turnovers on defense as they run away with a 60-45 victory over UMass Boston on Wednesday.

The Corsairs' overall record advances to 12-8, and they continue to move up in the Little East Conference (LEC) standings at 8-3. The Beacons drop to 11-10 overall and are now 4-7 against conference opponents.

UMass Dartmouth grad student Jordan Moretti led the way with impactful late scoring, totaling 18 points on the game and grabbed eight rebounds. Freshman Melanie DeMeo caught fire, sinking 3-of-5 from deep range, and finishing with 11 points for the Corsairs.

UMass Boston was led by grad student Meg Dixon who had a game-high 22 points on 8-of-13 from the field and 4-of-6 from deep. Dixon was the only Beacon to reach double figures.

Moretti and fellow Johnston, R.I. native Kaylin Zalewski (junior) imposed their will on the guards of UMass Boston, creating five and three steals, respectively. Every player from the young Beacons' team turned the ball over at least three times each. UMass Dartmouth made the most of those opportunities, scoring 34 points off of turnovers.

Despite only leading by four at the half, it felt like the Corsairs had firm control in this one. UMD only sunk one three ball in the entire first half, but dominated inside the key. Going into halftime with the score of 29-24, the Beacons were far from out of it.

To open the fourth quarter, UMassD's freshman Melanie DeMeo hit back-to-back massive threes to extend UMass Dartmouth's lead to 11. Moretti then decided it was her turn, getting back-to-back steals and layups, including a 3-point play after being fouled, to extend the lead even further to where the Beacons could not catch up. For good measure, DeMeo buried another deep ball with :40 seconds remaining as the Corsairs finished with a 60-45 victory at home.

UMass Dartmouth women's basketball returns to action on Saturday when they go back on the road to conference opponent Southern Maine. Tip off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
