Four Unanswered Scores Lift Anna Maria Over the Corsairs
Anna Maria goes on a late run to take a 5-3 victory over UMass Dartmouth, largely thanks to a hat trick from freshman Carter Anderson. The Corsairs led the contest 3-1 half-way through the second frame, until the Amcats responded with four unanswered goals to lift them on top.
Anna Maria improves to 5-6-1 overall, while UMass Dartnouth dips to 3-7-2 overall and drop their fourth consecutive game.
Senior captain Michael Perrone opened up the scoring for the Corsairs after a scoreless first period. His score came just 1:50 into the second period and was assisted by freshman Tyler Stewart. Just two minutes later, during a UMass Dartmouth power play, Stewart would score a goal of his own off passes junior Michael Mania and senior Jake Maynard. The back-to-back scores put the Corsairs up 2-0 early in the 2nd.
Anna Maria finally got on the board at the 5:28 mark in the second period. The lead was narrowed by Amcats' junior Guillaume Coulombe. At the 10-minute point, the Corsairs were able to extend their lead to 3-1, this time off the stick of Perrone again who had a good day on the ice. Stewart and Maynard each added another assist on that score. The Corsairs allowed one more goal before the second intermission, this one to Anna Maria freshman Carter Anderson who was unassisted on the first of his three goals. UMass Dartmouth held a 3-2 lead going into the final frame.
Anderson struck again for the Amcats just three minutes into the 3rd period to even the score at 3. The scoring finally slowed down for a bit in the contest, until Anna Maria capitalized on a power play opportunity with just 4:30 remaining in regulation. The power play score came from Amcats' freshman Pearce Baker. The Corsairs continued to attack for the remainder of the game, and eventually pulled their goalie from net to bring in another scoring threat. This pull resulted in another score for Anna Maria, and the third of the game for Anderson. The scrap-time goal delivered a 5-3 victory for Anna Maria over UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday night.
The Corsairs were out-shot 51-36. The Amcats won the faceoff battle 44-29.
UMD's senior goalkeeper Daniel Davidson posted 46 saves out of the 51 shots he saw in the loss.
