The ratio of students to teachers in New Bedford Public Schools District fell by 4.7% in the 2021-22 school year, according to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

There were 12,504 students being taught by 1,037.5 teachers in New Bedford Public Schools District, which covers schools within Bristol County and has a main office in New Bedford. That's an average of 12.1 students per teacher in the district during the 2021-22 school year.

In the previous year, New Bedford Public Schools District had 12,565 students and 991.2 teachers on staff.

Despite the shortage, under-representation of ethnicities among teachers was found to be a concern. The Rennie Center reported that only nine percent of teachers are people of color.

Massachusetts was ranked as the eighth best state for teachers, according to a WalletHub study.
