Corsairs Rout Wolves, 72-45

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's basketball team came away with a dominant, 72-45 victory over Western Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon.

The Corsairs' overall record advances to 11-8, and they continue to move up in the Little East Conference (LEC) standings at 7-3. The Wolves drop to 12-6 overall and are now 5-5 against conference opponents.

Four players reached double figures in scoring for the Corsairs. Jordan Moretti led the way with 15 points to go along with a game-high six assists. Juniors Teja Andrews and Kaylin Zalewski each netted 12 points and grabbed five rebounds. Grad student Caroline Wilson caught fire, hitting 3-of-4 threes she attempted, and finished with 11 points.

The Wolves won the battle on the boards by a 42-33 margin, but it wasn't enough as UMass Dartmouth forced 29 turnovers while coughing the ball up just 12 times. The hosts converted those turnovers into 26 points en route to the win. The Corsairs also finished with 30 points in the paint, while the Wolves managed 12.

The hosts opened the contest with an 11-1 run. However, the visitors countered to capture a 15-13 advantage when freshman Malaysia Dingle buried a three-pointer. The Corsairs recaptured the lead at the end of the quarter, and a strong second quarter from UMassD widened the gap to 36-24 at the half.

In the second half, UMass Dartmouth struggled shooting the ball from range, but made up for it by dominating the paint and outscoring the Wolves 30-12 inside. Their defense helped extend the Corsairs' lead even more, and they cruised through the remainder of the game en route to a big, Little East Conference (LEC) win.

WestConn could not sustain the second half rally as UMass Dartmouth stretched it to a 27-point advantage to round the scoring out at 72-45.

The Corsairs return to action at the Tripp Center on Wednesday when they host the traveling Beacons of UMass Boston. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
