Aviles-Santos Earns Another New England College Football Award

The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Awards Committee honored twelve distinguished college football players, coaches, and officials at the club's annual Bob Whelan College Night on Monday at the Burlington Marriott Hotel.

The 26th annual Joe Zabilski Award which recognizes New England's top offensive player in Divisions II/III, was given to UMass-Dartmouth junior quarterback Dante Aviles-Santos (Cumberland, RI).

Aviles-Santos was ranked eighth in the nation in passing yards and tied for 16th in total touchdown passes. He was 27th in completions per game with 19.9 and 24th in yards per pass attempt at 8.81. He also impacted games with his legs, rushing for 290 yards on the season and tallying three rushing touchdowns. For the season, Aviles-Santos completed 219 of 362 passes (.605), throwing for 3,189 yards and 28 touchdowns.

This year, Aviles-Santos broke UMass Dartmouth's single-season records for passing yards, touchdowns, completion percentage, passing yards per game, average yards per pass and total offense.

The Joe Zabilski Award adds yet another award to recognize Aviles-Santos's record-breaking season for the Corsairs. In addition to this Gridiron award, Aviles-Santos was honored by the New England Football Writers Association (NEFW) as the Season Gold Helmet Award Winner. He was also named the MASCAC Offensive Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Region First Team.

Aviles-Santos returns next season for his senior year, sure to be full of more historic achievements, and hopefully another trip to the Division III National Tournament.
