The Stonehill women’s basketball team was defeated by LIU 69-57 at Merkert Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. With this result, the Skyhawks’ record moves to 8-15 overall and 4-8 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play, while the Sharks improve to 15-8 overall and 10-2 in the NEC.
Julia Webster led Stonehill with 19 points and nine rebounds. She also recorded a career-high three steals during the game. Ella Pelletier contributed 15 points, six rebounds, and matched her career-best with four assists. Brooke Paquette added 10 points, bringing her career total to 946 points, and collected six rebounds.
The game began with LIU taking an early lead of 8-4 at the first media timeout. The Sharks maintained their advantage through the first quarter, ending it ahead 17-13. Pelletier scored seven points for Stonehill in that period.
In the second quarter, Stonehill trailed by as many as nine points midway through before Webster responded with an offensive rebound and floater. By halftime, Webster had tallied 11 points, five rebounds, and three steals; however, LIU led at the break by a score of 37-24.
LIU extended its lead to as much as 46-29 in the third quarter and entered the fourth up by sixteen points at 54-38. Although Stonehill outscored LIU by a margin of 19-15 in the final frame, LIU secured the victory.
Stonehill will next travel to face Wagner on Saturday, February 14. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
