Senior defender Sydney Russell of Stonehill College women’s hockey has signed a professional contract with MAC Budapest of the European Women’s Hockey League, according to an April 28 announcement.
Russell’s move to play professionally in Hungary marks a significant step for both her career and the Stonehill program. She is recognized as the first Skyhawk in program history to serve as team captain for two consecutive seasons.
“We’re thrilled to see Syd extending her career in Hungary,” said head coach Lee-J Mirasolo. “She was an exceptional three zone player for us with and without the puck, and we have no doubt she will be an asset for her next team.”
Russell departs as one of Stonehill’s most decorated defenders, holding the school record with 168 blocked shots and ranking as the top-scoring defender with 59 career points over 151 games. A native of Nashville, she played in every game during her four-year collegiate career, finishing her senior season with a personal best of 20 points on six goals and fourteen assists. She also led the team with 54 blocked shots and had a +5 rating in conference play.
MAC Budapest finished sixth in the EWHL standings during the 2025–26 season, posting a record of twelve wins, seven losses, zero ties, and three overtime losses.
Russell’s signing highlights opportunities for collegiate athletes to advance their careers internationally while contributing to teams abroad.
