Newton, MA — Angela Nie, a junior at Newton North High School, won the Massachusetts’ Fourth District’s annual congressional art competition with her painting, “Anticipation.”

Angela’s painting was selected from more than 60 pieces of local artwork that were submitted for this year’s competition and will be featured for one year in the U.S. Capitol building alongside other Congressional Art Competition winners from across the country. Angela was recognized during the Congressman’s Art Competition Reception at the Attleboro Arts Museum.

“Congratulations to Angela Nie of Newton North for winning this year’s Congressional Art Competition,” said Auchincloss. “Scores of students and parents gathered at the Attleboro Arts Museum to view each others’ work and to celebrate the judges’ top picks. Angela’s piece, ‘Anticipation,’ will be showcased at the U.S. Capitol.”

Following the ceremony, Angela said, “I appreciate the annual opportunity to showcase students’ creativity and skills. Although my intended message was about flies in my stomach during nervous anticipation (a less perfect take on ‘butterflies in my stomach’), I hope that anyone is able to understand this feeling. Not every moment needs to be as perfect as a flutter.”

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. This year, the judging panel included Mim Brooks Fawcett of the Attleboro Arts Museum, Seline Smith of the New Art Center in Newton, and Robin Wessman, a painter from Sharon.
