The UMass Dartmouth women's lacrosse team netted nine goals in the opening quarter as they held off Regis College, 17-14 on Tuesday. First year Maddie Wright posted eight goals and five assists in the victory. The Corsairs improve to 5-2 with the win, while the Pride slip to 4-4 for the season.
With the game tied at 2-2 at the 8:58 mark of the first quarter, the Corsairs rattled off six straight goals to give themselves a 8-2 advantage with three minutes to go in the opening frame. The run began with Wright dishing it to junior Melanny Sanchez Alvarez for her first goal of the game. Fellow junior Widline Thomas followed her with an unassisted score. Sanchez Alvarez sent in two more goals, followed by Wright's third and fourth of the game.
Regis College juniors Madeline Conover and Kylee Marley interrupted UMD's run with back-to-back goals in the final minutes of the first quarter. Junior Hannah Mitus re-sparked the Corsairs' offense with 14 seconds left in the quarter off a pass from Wright to go up 9-4 at the end of the quarter. Wright carried the momentum into the next quarter with an unassisted goal just :16 seconds after play resumed, and another at 8:15 from junior Erin Donovan. Wright scored her seventh goal of the half with 1:34 remaining to put the Corsairs up, 12-5 at the half.
The hosting Pride fought back in the second half, out-scoring UMass Dartmouth 9-to-5 in the final two quarters. UMD's defense held off the offensive pressure from Regis College in the end, as UMass Dartmouth finished on top, 17-14.
Wright led the way for the Corsairs offensively, posting eight goals on 13 shots, along with five assists and 12 draw controls. Wright has had a tremendous start to her career at UMass Dartmouth already, with 41 goals through six games of action. Sanchez-Alvarez netted four on the day to bring her to 29 for the season. She also caused five turnovers and snagged nine ground balls. Thomas added three scores of her own, and won seven draw controls as well. Senior Payton Conceicao (5-2) earned the win in goal for UMD with 12 saves.
For Regis, Conover had six goals on 12 shots, as Marley posted three goals and seven draw control wins. Sophomore Abbie Doheny added four goals as well. Shouldering the loss in net for the Pride was first year Daniela Mazo, who faced 25 shots on goal and stopped eight.
The Corsairs return to action on Saturday in a 1pm game at Plymouth State for their first conference matchup of the season.
