UMass Dartmouth struggled offensively as they fall, 2-14, to Wheaton College in their second matchup on Wednesday. The Corsairs (9-5) drop their fifth game of the season, while the Lyons advance to 10-2 to start their year.
Wheaton jumped ahead early with a two-run top of the first. The offense for Wheaton continued to pour it on, leading to a 7-1 advantage after six innings. In the top of the seventh inning, Wheaton added six more runs to their total, beginning with a single from senior Cavan Brady. The Lyons loaded up the bases with no outs after Robert Wirtanen (senior) was struck by a pitch and Kevin Matos (sophomore) reached first on a fielder's choice. The Corsairs retired two batters before Wheaton rallied six straight runs with two outs.
Junior Amedeo Ucci kicked off the scoring in the inning with an infield single that scored Wirtanen. His classmate, AJ Guindon, followed him with a double down the right field line that scored two runs and advanced Ucci to third. Senior Mike Maher was walked, loading up the bases once again with two outs. Fellow senior Nick Croteau then doubled to left field, scoring two more. Capping off the inning for the Lyons was Brady, who also led off the inning. Brady singled right up the middle, bringing home Maher. UMass Dartmouth sophomore Nick Pappas entered the game and retired the final batter to get UMD out of the inning.
The Corsairs had finally escaped the seventh inning, but not before Wheaton had pulled ahead to a 13-1 lead going into the eighth. The Lyons would go on to take the 14-2 victory over UMassD.
The Lyons were led by committee offensively. Maher went 3-for-4 from the plate, including a homerun, two RBI's and crossed home plate three times. Brady went 3-for-3 with two RBI's. Croteau knocked two runners in while going 2-for-4 and scoring twice. Guindon also knocked home two on two hits. Earning the win on the mound for the Lyons was first year Benjamin Oliveira (1-0). Oliveira pitched five innings and allowed just one hit in his first win of the season. Sophomore Josh Fischer pitched the final four innings and is credited the save.
UMass Dartmouth's offense was headed by sophomore Devyn Vezina, who had a hit, an RBI, and scored a run. Vezina contributed to both of the Corsairs' two runs. Freshman Brett Baker added a hit, was walked, and crossed home plate once. Shouldering the loss on the mound was freshman Geordan Jackson Murphy (1-2).
UMass Dartmouth looks forward to their weekend matchup with WestConn. Date and time are still to be determined.
