Wheaton College (Mass.) baseball player Cavan Brady (Sheffield, Mass.) was named the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Baseball Athlete of the Week, it was announced today by the NEWMAC.
In five games, the senior hit safely in all five contests, including three outings with three or more hits, while knocking in 10 runs, scoring eight times, smacking a pair of doubles, a triple and a home run. The shortstop batted .571 (12-21) and slugged .905 for the week to go with a .600 on-base percentage as part of a 1.505 OPS and struck out just once in 24 plate appearances. Brady was 4-6 with a double, three runs batted in and two runs scored to begin the week against State University of New York Brockport on March 13. He followed that effort with a 3-5 performance, including a triple, four runs batted in and three runs scored against Westminster University on March 15, before going 1-2 with a walk, a run batted in and a run scored the next day vs. Crown College. The Berkshire School product also went 3-4 with a home run, two runs driven in, a walk and a run scored vs. Ithaca College and closed out the week with a double and a run scored vs. Benedictine University to help the Lyons post a 5-0 record for the week.
For the season, the Psychology major is hitting .410 (16-39) to rank eighth in the league, while standing fourth in slugging percentage (.744) and fifth in OPS (1.234). Brady is tied for the conference lead with 16 RBI and two sacrifice flies, while topping the circuit with five doubles. In addition the middle infielder ranks among the NEWMAC leaders in hits (16/second), runs scored (13/third), home runs (two/third) and walks (eight/fifth). Brady also owns a .490 on-base percentage to go with a pair of stolen bases in 10 games.
Brady has played in 62 career games for Wheaton, while maintaining a lifetime batting mark of .352 (74-210) to go with a .448 on-base percentage and a .510 career slugging average. The senior has knocked in 43 runs, scored 57 runs, registered 15 doubles, three triples and four home runs, 39 bases on balls and 15 stolen bases.
The Lyons have won six in a row and are currently 8-2 on the season. Wheaton will be in action again tomorrow when it hosts University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at Sidell Stadium for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
