After a phenomenal opening week for the UMass Dartmouth baseball team, two student-athletes have received national recognition. Senior DJ Perron was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division III Hitter of the Week, while he and sophomore Andrew Steinhubel were also selected to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week.
Perron – a shortstop from Swansea, Mass., helped the Corsairs to a perfect 7-0 record last week. He batted a phenomenal .593 (16-for-27) with a team-high 17 RBI, scoring 10 runs with a team-best four home runs and two doubles.
Also named the Little East Conference Player of the Week, Perron hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning of a 12-11 triumph over Pennsylvania State University Altoona on March 7. In that game, Perron was 6-for-6 with seven RBI, three runs scored, a homer, and a double.
Through 10 games this season, Perron is batting a team-high .541, recording 20 hits in 37 at-bats. In addition to three doubles and six home runs, he has scored 20 runs and driven in 23 RBI's during that stretch. Perron owns a 1.699 OPS, as well as a 1.108 slugging percentage with a .591 on-base%. He has also gone 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts with a team-best 33 assists.
Among the Little East's best, Perron leads the conference in slugging percentage, on base + slugging percentage (OPS), hits, runs batted in and home runs. He is second overall in batting average, on-base percentage and runs scored. Nationally, Perron ranks sixth among Division III's best in home runs per game (0.60) and slugging percentage, 10th in RBI's, 11th in home runs, 25th in batting average and 32nd in total bases (41).
Steinhubel, a right-handed hurler out of Waltham, Mass., was outstanding for the Corsairs last week, going 3-0 with a save as the team went undefeated over seven games. In 5.0 innings of relief work, he allowed just one hit with no runs, striking out six batters with just one walk surrendered (intentional).
Appearing in four games total this season, Steinhubel has a 0.00 earned run average and a 0.67 opponent batting average against him.
UMass Dartmouth is currently 9-1 on the season and receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com/NCWBA Top 25. The Corsairs are back in action on Saturday, traveling to Bridgewater State for a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is slated for 12pm.
