The Corsairs returned home from their stint in Florida with a 9-0 record - the best start to a season for UMass Dartmouth baseball in 19 years - on Sunday. They turned right around on Monday to travel to Tufts University. The Jumbos (3-0) handed the Corsairs (9-1) their first loss of the season, by a final score of 12-1.

Tufts jumped ahead early, with four runs right away in the bottom of the first. They tallied on an additional four in the third inning, going up 8-0 before UMD could get any offense going. In the top of the fifth, Chase Stafford (Gr.) got the bats going for the Corsairs with a lead-off double down the right field line. He advanced to third on a fly-out to center from senior Andrew Bryant. The reigning LEC Player of the Week, DJ Perron, knocked home the only run for the Corsairs on a single up the middle.

The Jumbos responded right away in the bottom of the fifth with three more runs and added another in the eighth while holding UMD to one run in the contest. Sophomore Connor Podeszwa started on the mound for Tufts. He went 4.1 innings and allowed four hits, one run, and struck out five in his efforts. Podeszwa is earned the win, but he received help from his bullpen in Justin Wells (junior) and Brendan McFall (Gr.), who earned the save.  The Committee held the Corsairs to six hits and struck out 11.

UMass Dartmouth's offense was headed by Stafford, who had two hits and scored their only run. Perron went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI single. The other Corsairs to earn hits in this contest were Brett Baker (Fr.), T.J. Keefe (Jr.), and Andrew Possi (Jr.). Shouldering the loss on the mound was freshman Geordan Jackson Murphy (1-1), his first of the season. Also seeing significant action on the mound was Will Pacheco (Jr.), Chase Carey (Jr.), Nick Pappas (So.) and Carter Scovill (Fr.).

UMD has a well-deserved break before returning to action on Saturday to play Bridgewater State in a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m. in Bridgewater, Mass.
