After wrapping up one of the best regular seasons in program history, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth volleyball team is ready to take its talents to the postseason and make a deep run in the LEC Tournament.
When UMass Dartmouth faces UMass Boston Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Tripp Athletic Center, it will be the first time the program will host a playoff match since 2001. Under first-year Head Coach Justin Turco, the Corsairs finished the year 19-7 and a program-best 6-2 in the conference, securing the three-seed for the third time ever in the 26-year history of the LEC, joining the 2000 and 2001 teams.
UMass Dartmouth is led offensively by sophomore Kate Wade and junior Devon Laing. Wade leads the team with 277 kills with 249 digs and 38 aces, while Laing is second with 223 kills to go with 262 digs and 35 aces. Junior Marley Alexander is third on the team with 171 kills and second with 44 aces, she also leads the team with 57 blocks. Junior Maggie Sullivan (127 kills) and sophomore Chelsea Sanker (114 kills) are dangerous on offense as well.
The defensive anchor for the team is Emily Pogorelec. The freshman leads the LEC with 456 digs and 5.12 digs per set. She also leads the Corsairs with 52 aces. Classmates Sabrina Bordone (454) and Emma Rousseau (372) lead the way in assists for the team.
UMass Dartmouth defeated West Conn for the first time in program history on Oct. 15 and swept Eastern Connecticut for the first time in the 52-match history of the series to close the regular season on Oct. 29.
The Corsairs swept UMass Boston in the regular-season meeting on Oct. 12 in Boston.
