Resilient Corsairs Come up Short at Salve Regina

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth volleyball team dropped a road non-conference match at Salve Regina Tuesday night, 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21).

The Corsairs (5-4) were led by sophomore Kate Wade, who finished with 10 kills and 19 digs. Junior Marley Alexander was also in double-figure kills with 10 and led the team with three aces. Junior Devon Laing and freshman Emily Pogorelec each recorded 16 digs, while freshman Emma Rousseau had 15 assists and 11 digs. Classmate Sabrina Bordone added 17 assists. The Seahawks (5-4) had three players reach double-figure kills and digs, respectively.

UMass Dartmouth led the way through most of the first set, taking an 8-5 advantage after kills by Alexander and sophomore Gabriella Monico. Kills by Laing, an ace from Alexander and a kill by sophomore Chelsea Sanker built the lead to 14-11. Salve then went on a 6-2 run to go up, 17-16, but a kill by Alexander sparked a 4-1 spurt to make it a 20-18 advantage. Salve Regina then closed the set on a 7-3 run to take a 1-0 match lead.

Salve Regina never trailed in the second set. After the Seahawks took an 8-4 lead, UMass Dartmouth went on a 5-2 run to trim the deficit to 10-9. Salve Regina then scored seven of the next eight points to extend its lead to 15-9. A kill by junior Maggie Sullivan capped off a 4-0 run to make it 15-13, but the Seahawks finished the set on a 10-4 run to take a 2-0 match advantage.

The Corsairs won the third set to gain some life. After falling behind 17-11 and looking like the match was wrapping up, five Salve errors and kills by Alexander and Sullivan, aces from Alexander and a kill by freshman Raelynn Perregeaux suddenly gave UMass Dartmouth a 23-20 lead. The Seahawks made it 24-23, but Wade spiked the ball down for the kill to force a fourth set.

The fourth set was back-and-forth and the score was even at 18. Salve Regina then closed the match on a 7-2 run with four kills and an ace in that sequence to end the match.

UMass Dartmouth hosts Lasell on Firday at 6 p.m. for the SAAC Game of the Week.
