Veronica Bock's Final-Second Goal Lifts Corsairs Over Salem State

Freshman Veronica Bock made her first-career goal a memorable one Saturday afternoon at Cressy field. With three seconds on the clock, Bock sent a free kick from 25-yards out flying toward the goal, and the ball found the back of the net just before the final horn to give the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's soccer team a 1-0 opening day victory. It was the first win at UMass Dartmouth for Head Coach Bobby Desilets.

The Corsairs (1-0) outshot the Vikings (0-2) 21-6 and 9-1 on goal. Senior Mya Parker led the team with three shots on goal, while grad student Kait Bernier and freshman Kaitlyn Duarte each had two on net, freshman Lauren Couitt and, of course, Bock both tallied one shot on goal.

UMass Dartmouth controlled the pace of the play and time of possession for virtually the entire game. Parker had two great scoring opportunities in the first half that were denied by Salem State junior keeper Lilly Pfefferle. Couitt's shot on goal came in the 39th minute, but Pfefferle was there to keep it a scoreless game going into the half.

Bernier, Duarte and Parker all had opportunities to score in the second half, but could not convert. With time running down, a Salem State foul set up a free kick with three seconds to go. Bock launched the ball toward the net and ignited the team into celebration mode.

UMass Dartmouth plays its first road game of the season at Lasell on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
