The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's tennis team started its season in grand style Thursday afternoon by sweeping Lesley, 9-0, and earning Head Coach Doug Chapman his 100th career collegiate victory in the process.
"It was a good opening match," said Chapman. "Both teams were nervous at the start but settled down to play some nice tennis."
The Corsairs raced ahead to fast start by sweeping doubles. The junior duo of IsaBella Winter and Ailey Riddick won their match, 8-4. Senior Alanna O'Connell and freshman Zuri Walters took down their opponents, 8-2. The final doubles match went to senior McKenzie Ferrari and junior Caroline Lemieux, who won 8-3.
In singles, Winter won 6-3, 7-5; Walters bounced back to defeat her opponent 4-6, 6-0, 6-2; sophomore Claire Yang took her match 6-2, 6-4; O'Connell was victorious 6-4, 6-2; Riddick stayed the course to win 6-2, 5-7, 10-3; and freshman Bailey Clarke won a hard-fought match 7-6, 2-6, 10-6.
Chapman on the match: "Winter won a high quality first singles match against Lesley's Jessica Legendre, a talented player she had seen on the Florida academy circuit. Walters and Clarke got their college careers off to a good start. Yang and Lemieux also won their first varsity matches. Winter, Walters, O'Connell and Riddick were winners in both singles and doubles and Ferrari was victorious in doubles. Lesley is a much-improved team and it was nice to start with a victory."
UMass Dartmouth hits the road for a match at Curry College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
