The Stonehill College women’s tennis team lost 5-2 to Wagner College in a Northeast Conference match on March 13. The defeat leaves the Skyhawks with a record of 2-9 overall and an even 2-2 in conference play, while the Seahawks improved to 5-5 overall and started their conference schedule at 1-0.
This result is significant for both teams as it affects their standings within the Northeast Conference. For Stonehill, the loss marks another challenge in their season as they seek to improve their record.
Stonehill began the evening by winning the doubles point. After Wagner’s Samantha Bentsianov and Liepa Sataite defeated Anneliese Beltran and Iliana deArmas at No. 3 doubles, Stonehill’s Julie Holte and Madison Warren responded with a win at No. 1 doubles, followed by Arya Chabria and Lilah Shallcross clinching the point with a tiebreak victory at No. 2.
Wagner gained momentum during singles play, winning three straight matches over Beltran, Chabria, and Warren to take a commanding lead. Holte managed to secure a three-set win at No. 1 singles for Stonehill, narrowing the gap to one point. However, Wagner closed out the match with victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles against Camila Zuluaga Rodriguez and deArmas.
Looking ahead, Stonehill (2-9, 2-2 NEC) will return to action on Saturday, April 4 for another conference matchup against Long Island University in New York.
