Stonehill women’s hockey falls in double overtime against Franklin Pierce in NEWHA semifinals

The Stonehill College women’s hockey team ended its season after a 2–1 double-overtime loss to Franklin Pierce University in the New England Women’s Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) Semifinals on Wednesday night. The game, held in Winchendon, Massachusetts, saw the Skyhawks finish their campaign with an 18–17–2 record. Franklin Pierce improved to 22–11–2 and advanced to the NEWHA Championship game scheduled for Saturday.

Stonehill had a strong showing in faceoffs, winning 46 compared to Franklin Pierce’s 34. However, Franklin Pierce outshot Stonehill by a significant margin, recording 65 shots on goal to Stonehill’s 41.

Senior goaltender Eve Stone set a new program record with 63 saves during the match, surpassing the previous record of 61 saves set by Alexsa Caron against Ohio State on October 25, 2024. “Senior netminder Eve Stone set a program record with 63 saves between the pipes, surpassing sophomore Alexsa Caron’s previous mark of 61 saves set against Ohio State on October 25, 2024,” according to the college.

Sophomore Seina Spadone scored her sixth goal of the season for Stonehill. Seniors Mia Kenmore and Bailey Feeney contributed assists—Kenmore’s second and Feeney’s fourteenth of the year. Seniors Maddi Achtyl and Hannah Squires led in faceoff wins and blocked shots respectively; Achtyl won sixteen draws while Squires recorded four blocks.

Eve Stone kept Franklin Pierce scoreless through two periods despite facing heavy pressure and making numerous stops. The Skyhawks took a third-period lead when Kenmore passed up the boards to Feeney at the blue line. Feeney’s shot produced a rebound that Spadone converted into a goal at the 12:20 mark.

Franklin Pierce tied the game late in regulation during a power play. Hailey Anderson scored her ninth goal of the season off an assist from Addison Andre, sending the contest into overtime.

In the first overtime period, Stonehill outshot Franklin Pierce but neither team managed to score. The deadlock continued until Franklin Pierce earned their fourth power-play opportunity early in double overtime. Abigail Broz scored her seventh goal of the season at 5:52 into the period, securing victory for Franklin Pierce.
