The Stonehill softball team lost the final game of its series against New Haven on April 26, despite a rally during the middle innings. The Skyhawks had previously secured the series win with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
This game was important as it capped off a weekend matchup between two conference opponents and tested Stonehill’s ability to respond under pressure. The outcome showed both teams’ strengths and highlighted key performances from several players.
Sophomore Sarah Taylor contributed with two hits in four at-bats, including an RBI single in the second inning. Senior catcher Jessica Brill went one-for-three at the plate and threw out a runner attempting to steal second base. Freshman shortstop Juli Murillo also had two hits, scored once, and stole a base from her spot at the top of the lineup.
After New Haven scored first in the opening inning, Brill helped limit further damage by catching Bella Chenet stealing. Stonehill tied the game in the third when Taylor’s infield single allowed Murillo to score. However, New Haven responded by scoring four runs in their half of that inning to take a 5-1 lead. The Skyhawks narrowed the gap by capitalizing on defensive errors but could not complete their comeback as New Haven added three more runs later in the game.
Looking ahead, Stonehill is scheduled to return home for a single game against Rhode Island at Fr. Gartland Field on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
