The Stonehill College softball team lost both games of a Northeast Conference doubleheader to Fairleigh Dickinson University on May 2. Despite a late push in the second game, the Skyhawks were unable to overcome the Knights.
The results are important as they impact Stonehill’s standing in the conference and set up the final game of the series. The team will look to regroup for their next matchup.
In game one, senior Jessica Brill led Stonehill by going 2-for-3 at bat with a double and scoring a run. Freshman Juli Murillo also contributed by scoring after a sacrifice fly from Sarah Taylor. However, FDU quickly responded with five runs in their half of the first inning and continued adding runs throughout, leading to an 11-3 win over Stonehill.
Game two saw Murillo go 3-for-4 from the top of the lineup with another run scored. Sophomore Taylor Schoonmaker drove in all three runs for Stonehill across both games. The Skyhawks took an early lead when Murillo scored off Schoonmaker’s RBI single, but FDU answered back and pulled ahead by scoring in consecutive innings. A seventh-inning rally brought Stonehill within reach after Luka Bornhorst walked and later scored on Schoonmaker’s sacrifice fly, but FDU pitcher Maryjane Limon secured her complete-game victory.
Stonehill will play again tomorrow at noon for the final contest of this series against FDU.
