Stonehill College’s baseball team defeated Coppin State University 18-5 on April 24 at Lou Gorman Field. The Skyhawks improved their record to 16-20 overall and 13-6 in Northeast Conference play, while the Eagles dropped to 7-28 overall and 7-15 in conference games.
The win is notable for Stonehill as it marks a strong performance during their conference schedule. Such victories can impact playoff standings and team morale as the season progresses.
Junior Nathan Kearney had his fifth three-hit game in six outings, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored. Freshman Armanis Romero drove in six runs, including a grand slam. Graduate student Sam Parks and sophomore Will Newton combined for perfect on-base days, reaching base every time through hits, walks, or being hit by pitches. Junior Jamison Howland recorded his ninth two-hit game of the season, while junior Ryan LeClair extended his on-base streak to 31 games. Senior Michael Rickert increased his RBI total to a team-leading 40.
Junior Cam Morrison contributed both offensively and defensively with his second home run of the year and throwing out his tenth runner from behind the plate. Senior Jimmy Gilleran earned his third win after pitching five innings with six strikeouts.
Stonehill took an early lead when Romero drove in Kearney during the second inning. After Coppin State tied it up briefly, Stonehill responded quickly with key hits from Rickert and others to build momentum. The Skyhawks broke open the game with big innings in both the fourth and fifth frames—highlighted by Morrison’s solo home run and Romero’s grand slam.
The teams will continue their series at Lou Gorman Field tomorrow at 1 p.m.
