The Stonehill College baseball team lost to Le Moyne College, 5-4, in a Northeast Conference matchup on May 1 at Dick Rockwell Field in Syracuse, New York. The Skyhawks’ record moved to 18-22 overall and 14-8 in conference play after the defeat, while the Dolphins improved to 15-22 overall and 15-10 in league action.
The game was closely contested throughout. Junior Cam Morrison led Stonehill offensively by reaching base in all four plate appearances with three hits and a walk. Junior Jamison Howland notched his team-leading sixteenth multi-hit game of the season. Juniors John Bureau and senior Michael Rickert each collected two hits as well. Junior Nathan Kearney drove in two runs for the Skyhawks, while junior Ryan LeClair extended his on-base streak to thirty-five games.
On the mound, senior Jimmy Gilleran started for Stonehill and allowed one earned run over five innings with three strikeouts. Sophomore Jack Welsch provided three scoreless innings of relief work.
Le Moyne took an early lead with three RBI singles in the second inning. Stonehill answered back with a sacrifice fly from Kearney in the third inning but trailed again after another Dolphin run scored on an RBI single in the fourth. The Skyhawks narrowed the gap further when Kearney drove home another run and Howland added an RBI single during a fifth-inning rally.
Both teams’ pitchers kept offenses quiet until late innings when Bureau’s RBI single tied it at four for Stonehill in the ninth inning. However, Le Moyne clinched victory with a walk-off RBI single in their half of the ninth.
Stonehill will continue its weekend series against Le Moyne tomorrow at Dick Rockwell Field.
