Freshman midfielder Sophia Gouveia of the Stonehill women’s lacrosse team was named Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week for the eighth time this spring, according to an April 27 announcement from the conference office.
Gouveia, who is from North Stonington, Connecticut, has received this honor on seven previous occasions throughout the season. Her latest recognition follows a performance in which she scored three goals, secured six draw controls, collected two ground balls, and caused a turnover against Howard University.
Gouveia is currently second on her team with 39 goals and third with 44 points. She also leads Stonehill in draw controls with a total of 84.
In addition to Gouveia’s accolade, junior goalie Nina Tremonte was named NEC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. Tremonte previously earned this distinction on February 23 and recently matched her season-high with 13 saves during Stonehill’s win over Howard on April 25. She also picked up three ground balls in that game. Tremonte holds an overall record of 11 wins and six losses with 145 saves and an average of just over eleven goals allowed per game.
Stonehill has secured a share of the Northeast Conference regular-season title and will enter the upcoming tournament as the number two seed. The tournament will be hosted by top-seeded Le Moyne on Thursday, April 30 and Saturday, May 2. The Skyhawks are set to play third-seeded LIU at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
