Maynard Named Semifinalist for Joe Concannon Award

The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston president Cheryl Duddy-Schoenfeld announced that 33 players have been named semifinalists for the 22nd Joe Concannon Award and UMass Dartmouth senior defender Jake Maynard is among this year's finalists.

The Joe Concannon Award, presented annually to the best American-born NCAA Division II/III hockey player in New England, was established in 2001 shortly after the passing of the longtime writer for The Boston Globe, who had a great passion for the game of college hockey while always advocating strongly for amateur athletics.

Twenty-five institutions are represented in the slate of candidates that includes six from the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference. This year, no institution honored had more than two finalists. Plymouth State led the MASCAC squads with two selections, while Fitchburg State, Framingham State, Salem State and UMass Dartmouth each had one.

This year's list of semifinalists marks the largest-ever field for the Concannon Award, including 20 forwards, nine defensemen and four goaltenders.

Maynard, a captain who hails from St. John, Indiana, has started all 24 games for the Corsairs this season. He leads the team in points with 20, amassing a team-high 18 assists with two goals. He has recorded 66 shots so far with one of his goals coming on the power play, the other a game-winner.

Ranking third in the MASCAC in assists, Maynard has also blocked 39 shots this season – which ranks second on the squad. He is currently second among all conference defensemen in points and the overall leader in assists at his position.

During the 2021-22 campaign, Maynard was fourth on the team in scoring with two goals and 15 assists – which ranked second overall – for 17 points. Both of his tallies came on the power play, while he recorded 17 blocked shots.

In his rookie season in 2019-20, Maynard played in 27 of 28 games for UMD, notching three goals with an assist for four points.

UMass Dartmouth (8-14-2; 6-10-1 MASCAC) returns to the ice on Saturday in a critical MASCAC game at Westfield State. Puck drop is set for 5:35pm in Westfield.
